As a young basketball player I look up to Michael Jordan. He influences me to do great things just like he did, and here is why.
Michael Jordan was born on February 17, 1963 in Brooklyn, New York. As a young child though, Jordan mover to North Carolina. When he moved there he attended Laney High School in Wilmington, North Carolina. Jordan always loved baseball as a kid, but he looked up to his brother Larry who played basketball. So in high school he tried it out. This would be a very new thing for him.
In high school Jordan tried out for the team but, was a skinny 5"11 sophmore. So he got cut from the varsity team. Over the summer of his sophomore though, he worked hard and grew to about 6"3. His junior year he made the team, this was his first step to his legendary basketball career. As a senior he was named an All -American. This was a very big achievement for him. Also this is a great opportunity for a young black American.
For collage Jordan attended the University of North Carolina. He was the third man behind James Worthy and Sam Perkins, but he got his chance to shine in the championship game against Georgetown. He ha 16 points, 9 rebounds and he made the winning shot to give them a 62-63 win over Georgetown. Then in his sophomore and junior years he was named player of the year. Also in his junior year he was chosen as the third overall pick in the 1984 NBA Draft by the Bulls.
Later on in his career he would go on to be Rookie of the Year, five-time NBA MVP, six-time NBA Champion, six-time NBA Finals MVP, ten-time All NBA First Team, nine-time NBA All Defensive First Team, Defensive Player of the Year, 14 time NBA All Star, three-time All Star MVP, 50th Anniversary All Time Team, and the NBA's highest scoring record. This is why they say Michael Jordan is the best ever. Like Magic Johnson said "there's Michael Jordan and then there is the rest of us."
This is why I see Michael Jordan as an important person in black history. He was a regular person who worked hard to achieve a dream and did it. i think that is one of the things that make you a great person. When people read about his story they can see what he did and become inspired to persue their dreams just like he did.
